What is the history of the Museum?

The Museum opened to the public in September 2014. Privately owned and operated by a Cairns resident, it is now the largest museum of its type in the Southern Hemisphere, boasting over 235 tanks, armoured cars, artillery guns, and other large-scale exhibits on display.

Where is the Museum located?

The Museum is located at 2 Skyrail Drive, Smithfield, adjacent to the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

How much does it cost?

School group admission:

  • Children: $18.00 per child
  • First two adults and bus driver: Free
  • Additional adults: $30.00
Are there school group discounts?

School groups of 15 or more qualify for a 15% discount. Payment must be made in one transaction.

How do I pay for the visit?

Once final numbers are confirmed, the Museum will invoice the school. Payment options:

  • Direct deposit
  • Credit/Debit card or cash on the day (card payments must be one transaction)
What are the Museum’s opening hours?

The Museum is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Arrival and departure times are flexible for school groups.

What is the minimum group size?

There is no minimum group size.

How far in advance should I book?

Please confirm your booking at least two weeks before your planned visit.

How many adults should accompany my school group?

Children must be supervised at all times. Recommended ratios:

  • Primary: 1 adult per 10 pupils
  • Secondary: 1 adult per 15 pupils
What about homeschooling educators?

Homeschooling educators and pupils receive the same benefits as other schools.

Do you have a risk assessment for school visits?

Yes, the Museum’s standard risk assessment can be provided upon request.

Do you have handicapped access?

The Museum is accessible with ramps and accessible toilets. However, the downstairs weapons display and shooting gallery are not wheelchair accessible.

Do you allow assistance animals?

Animals meeting the definition of “assistance animal” under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) are permitted.

Can I visit the Museum before bringing my school group?

Yes, staff may visit for free to plan the trip. Family members must pay normal admission. Email schools@ausarmour.com to arrange.

Curriculum needs

We encourage schools to discuss curriculum needs in advance so we can tailor the visit.

How should I prepare my pupils?

Please discuss safety rules before arrival:

  • No running
  • No climbing on vehicles
  • No operating artillery mechanisms
  • Avoid touching large exhibits
Where do buses park?

Two bus spaces are available on the west side of the car park. Additional parking is available on the adjacent grassed area.

How long should I allow for a visit?

A self-guided tour typically takes 1.5 hours. We can assist with scheduling.

Are all exhibits undercover?

Yes, all exhibits are housed inside the purpose-built facility.

Is the Museum air-conditioned?

The main building is not air-conditioned, but the lower level is. Ventilation and large ceiling fans help cool the space.

Is there a café?

The Museum includes a café area with tables and vending machines. Food and drinks are only allowed in the café or on the Commander’s Deck.

Is there space to eat lunch?

Two lunch areas are available:

  • Café Area: Seats ~20 people
  • Commander’s Deck: Available on request
Are there toilet facilities?

Yes, including wheelchair-accessible toilets near the café.

Is there space to store bags?

No dedicated storage is available. We recommend leaving bags on the bus.

Is there a gift shop?

Yes, with a wide range of items. Schools are encouraged to visit the shop after the tour.

Can we take photographs?

Yes, photography is allowed.

Can we visit the Workshop?

No, for safety reasons the workshop is not included in school visits.

Can we use the Shooting Gallery?

No, pupils are not permitted to use the shooting gallery during school visits.

Are activities accessible for disabled pupils?

Most activities are accessible. Please notify us of additional needs when booking.

What if I need to cancel?

Please notify the Museum as soon as possible. If payment has been made, a 10% administration fee applies to refunds.
